can someone explain why a largely single player franchise needs always-on DRM?

if you can actually answer this question you're probably an starfish.
Preventing piracy

I can get into the launcher but when I launch the game it plays music but no .exe appears.  I checked task manager and it says it is running (LIES).

because EA doesn't want their game pirated (even though it's stupid to have drm in the first place).

The amount of people that actually pirate games are so small they aren't even losing that much money

That happened to me on first launch. Let it sit and run its course.

Fluid multiplayer mostly, with "online market" used as well to make it seem less like DRM.

About 5 minutes.

Looks like launch problems are still plaguing and probably will for a good portion of the night.  Maybe tomorrow/Thursday things will get better.

Restart Origin once more.

Restarted Origin, launched SimCity (got the same result as last time), and then waited for 7.5 minutes to no avail.

From what I hear the EU servers aren't having as bad of a problem unless there's a stuffload of Americans still trying to play on them.  So yeah you're right.

"Unable to create city at this time"
