This I understand, sort of like Mardalf said. But what we're talking about is if there's an argument going on and out of nowhere someone asks "who are you?" As if they're trying to call them a nobody rather than reply to the argument.

all the time I'm seeing people here (and not just here, it happens everywhere else, I'm sure) get insulted or whatever, and then ask the person who insulted them "who are you?"
because it totally matters whether or not you know them
for example, you don't need to know me in order for me to think you're an idiot
it is seriously stupid to say
and then, they don't even respond to the actual insult
like the fact that you don't know them means what they said is automatically irrelevant

If some random nobody who you've never addressed before posts in a thread simply to insult you, they're the one being stupid.

but if you state an argument and someone states their side of an argument, you don't need to ask "who are you anyways lol" just because you don't know them

Usually when someone asks the question "who are you?" During an argument, it's meant to be an insult and a rhetorical question. In most cases they know who you are but they try to make an example of your existance to them like they dont care what you have to say. Almost like " i dont give a stuff about whatever you have to say". Kids used to say it back in my middle school like it was a hip thing at the time.
