dude chill I didn't know what you made the game with at first no need to get pissy over it

also, i was considering using javascript for game development because i like it, is it possible to compile javascript games to an exe?
Unnecessary, as everyone and their cousin would 9 times out of 10 prefer to play it in their browser, rather than having to download something.

NOOOO.

Don't head down that path! It only leads to doooooooooom... :,(

What doesn't help is that the default textures and lighting for Unity is pretty awful which only accentuates the problem.

that doesn't make any direct contribution though. it's still all on the developer in the end

The developer can make their own lighting and textures in the engine so if a game is made with the stuff default options its the dev's fault

just look at Rust. Its made in Unity 5 and it looks loving amazing

Um. Wat.

I love Unity. I was referring to the path of "trying to make a game but end up making an abomination that could very well cause the next world war".

ok

my original post just said "wat path" but i thought that wasn't enough content to warrant a post so i tacked on a gun jump sry

This, this, a million times this.

Distance, Hearthstone, Audiosurf 2, and Unturned were all made with Unity.

i can see what he's sayin tho

the default assets aren't fantastic but they're there; people that take the easy route with default assets only are automatically worse off

ofc having no default assets at all would be kinda butts because they're good for placeholder stuff without having to put much work in on your own. however, it's never really OK to continue using them for the end product. that's just gross (unless it's intentionally gross as part of legitimate humor, but this wouldn't work as a 'theme')

unity free makes ugly 3d games

all games listed above use pro, rust uses unity 5 which isnt even (officially) available yet

about every fancy looking 3d game made with unity you'll find uses pro

you just can't have fancy 3d graphics without pro.

Oh, there are workarounds (like writing your own code for soft shadows). Also, I've found that a good chunk of what makes for "good" 3D graphics is the quality of your textures and bump maps.

However, I do agree that Pro has neat features and can make the game look better overall. But Unity Free is still a good engine to start with.
