Author Topic: The obesity trend in America is amazing  (Read 8264 times)

I've never been overweight, but I used to be pretty unfit until I moved to my current school. Mandatory sport, while it sounds terrible is really good for a lot of things (fitness, teamwork + you get to know the other people your age really well)

While I don't live in the US, it is somewhat unfair to compare things, Australia did have a pretty high rate of obesity at some point if I recall correctly.

Fat people should also stop blaming it on genetics. Genetics isn't going to stop you from going for a walk (usually) or eating healthier. It might make you naturally heavier, but if you ripple when you bump into something...

they should ban fast food and execute the executives of monsanto. #foodrevolution

it must be the companies faults that I'm a fat forget
and stop blaming it on genetics unless you have a goddamn diagnosis from a doctor, major genetic issues aren't all too common compared to lazyness

and stop blaming it on genetics
I remember reading something where they took a bunch of people claiming their obesity was a result of some condition they couldn't control, checked them out, and only like 1 or 2% actually had a condition

don't you think the CDC should take to this as a hazard, since obesity is a disease?
by that logic, we should just ban all water, because you can get water poisoning if you drink too much of it
It's all in moderation.

Companies have a morally obligation to tell you how they're loving your food, and that's it. It's the individual's responsibility to ultimately choose what poison they consume.

Companies like Monsanto can suck off a whale and collapse, but as far as fast food joints are concerned, as soon as they come forward and tell people about how the meat patties are frozen and can be used as hockey pucks and how Potato and Gravy is just the grease from the fryers "treated" and then added to some powdery white stuff that's actually worse than cocaine, I don't have much of a problem with what they're doing.

1. Fast food is cheap.
2. People in america are poor as hell.
3. They don't have the money to buy expensive nutritious food.
4. Fast food is cheap.

I'll just leave this here.

That chart only aims towards people 5'4".
Over these last few decades, people have been getting taller, averaging 5'10".
Of course, its no excuse, but shorter people tend to be more obese, and there are less of them.

But besides that, its going by BMI, which I've explained in the BMI topic that it doesn't care about density of the body, it only cares about mass all together, so people with a large amount of muscle are considered obese.

There's more to it then that. There are plenty of plenty of people who have the money and everything, but simply don't care, are too lazy to find/make proper food, have no understanding of what healthy/unhealthy is, ex:
(he drinks various brand of HFCS sweeted, artificiallyflavored/colored fruit drinks, and thinks they're healthy becuse "it's juice")
or some various other reason

Yeah but you can tell just by looking at someone if they're a large percent of muscle or fat. If the latter then you can obviously ignore BMI

exercise is freeeeeeeeeeee

Slightly relevant: Does anyone know anyone who like....eats total crap, but tunnel visions on ONE very specific thing that they don't eat because it's "unhealthy" (and often isn't actually unhealthy)? Like my mom's bf pretty much eats like a stereotypical American with no understanding of what's healthy (he drinks various brand of HFCS sweeted, artificially flavored/colored drinks, and thinks they're healthy becuse they're juice"), but recently he decided to not eat corn because "it's bad for you because you can't digest it" Or the people who avoid gluten with no medical reason to, because they think it'll help them lose weight, when the rest of their diet is crap
You should inform her that most of the processed food in America has corn in it in one way or another (even soft drinks).

Sorry, but...

Fast food isn't cheap. Going to the store and purchasing ingredients for a meal is cheaper. Think of this.

My mom can make a pot of chili that lasts us 2 - 3 meals for 7 people. This pot of chili costs $10 or less , based on ingredients used. Feeding a family of 7 an equivalent amount of food for 2 - 3 meals at a fast food restaurant costs ~$56 - $84 - and that's only if everyone buys a maximum of $4 worth of food.

Sorry; although people think that fast food is good to buy if you're poor, it's actually one of the things making people poor - simply because they don't want to/won't make time to cook. My point still stands - it's convenience.

almost 40% of america is loving obese
thats honestly loving disgusting and sad to think that that many people are that pathetic
if your fat go loving workout and eat healthier youre a loving joke

These kind of charts ignore looks though, so its a bit skew on that department.
Also, I notice that the chart bumps up the better technology gets. Its easy to get information from people now than it was in 1985. People couldn't just go online and submit there bmi on the internet in 1985.

I'm the complete opposite of obese.

According to AMA, obesity is a disease.

Definition of disease, shall we?
dis·ease
diˈzēz
noun
a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury.
"bacterial meningitis is a rare disease"
synonyms:   illness, sickness, ill health; More

a particular quality, habit, or disposition regarded as adversely affecting a person or group of people.
"Departmental administration has often led to the dread disease of departments"

Obesity is a large amount of fat in a body. This is a disorder of a structure (fat?) and produces a large range of signs or symptoms.

You have ill health if you are obese. You have a disease because of your lack of self-control.
