i thought with little mac's side b, pressing b while in the animation causes you tp punch early but you still go the same distance

It stops short. Kinda like shiek's down+B but not as hard imo.

The usefulness probably comes from anyone but Little Mac mains knowing it, and standing at a ledge expecting for you to fall off.

OK, it goes the same distance, but if you hit B too late or don't hit it at all then he goes into a landing animation where he stumbles forward
so it's not gonna save you

i have an agressive playstyle, i do not like to run away or just run out the timer. i can confirm this strategy works as i have pulled stupids and ran right into fsmashes multiple times because gotta get that dash attack
