you clown im on the side of fun.

i mean i've been playing fighting games all my life, i love them. i understand the importance of maining a character. i just think SSB isn't a game where maining is conducive to having a fun time even competitively
To me, part of the fun of competitive play is seeing yourself improve. (it's also about doing dank combos and one-upping your friends though)
Fact is it's better to have an in depth understanding of one or two characters than a shallow understanding of 4 or more. Besides, you'll find that by going in depth you learn more about the mindgames, the neutral, the basic formula of the game. Then you can apply that to other characters. I'm not saying never play other characters. I'm saying pick one and go insane. Before you know it you'll run out of tricks to copy and start inventing your own.

but SSB isn't like street fighter where each character has 50 combos, final counters, frame breaks, tons of movecancels. not that each figher in SSB isn't robust, but im sure you can have an in-depth competitive knowledge of plenty of characters. i know i have.

that's the thing though, smash is fluid, there aren't preprogrammed combos. which is why it's important to have in depth knowledge, because it isn't handed to you. it's not technical facts about your character you need to know, you just need to be comfortable in as many situations as possible with a reliable understanding of your toolset, and that means focusing on that character. i'm not saying you can't have in depth knowledge of several characters, but getting good quickly means going in depth before attempting to broaden your character list.

it's defo not nearly as important to focus on one character in smash bros when compared to more traditional fighting games, simply cus it's just not as complex, but maining in any game can help you better understand the character's moveset and handling on a deeper, more reflexive level. learning is about making connections, and if you spend a lot of time with one character, you make a lot more connections and learn a lot more which is useful in a wider variety of situations. in smash, a lot of the complexity comes from tiny details in attacks, movement, and damage, which you have to feel out and become comfortable with to use effectively. in other fighting games, it's typically a lot more straightforward and knowledge-based rather than felt out.

I don't even know who I main.

It's pretty much Sheik if we're talking about who I'm inherently alright with
But in terms of who I'd want to main it's my low tier buddy Ike.

I'm wallowing in a pool of Bowser Jr, Dark pit, and Gannondorf

honestly im against maining in most games because the top tier are characters i never like lol.

that's why i love to master fighting games but i could never play competitive.

yeah same here, I'm really good at "low-tier" guys like wario, dr. mario, and pac-man but I suck at and/or don't like rosalina or diddy

no i'm serious eventhubs labels wario as a low tier dude

(out of 48 characters, putting him in the 8th percentile)
...why.

aren't low tiers the most rewarding to main? often their metas are completely undeveloped

i.e yoshi in melee, snake in brawl

Four in the mornin', and I'm zonin'
I think I'm possessed, it's an omen
I keep it 300 like the Romans
300 bitches, where the Trojans?
Baby, we livin' in the moment
I've been a menace for the longest
But I ain't finished, I'm devoted
And you know it, and you know it

maining in super smash bros is lame. SSB is a party game, it's fun to play with buddies, if you're a tryhard who only plays one character you're not fun to fight.

this

i have nothing against competitive play but the fact is that most overly competitive people are just boring to play against. playing against the same character using the same strategy over and over again isn't fun.

I actually meant friend code but okay. Wanna smash?

Mine is 4811-7021-6103

Oh yeah, if you're wondering, my favorite characters are Ness, ROB, and both links (if I hadn't made that point clear enough)
Sorry I didn't see this sooner, that last post was my last one before going to bed.
