I tried using compiz --replace, and it worked, but the window decorator and plugins did not start.

And I can't launch the compizconfig settings manager either.

This may be because I recently ran the command yaourt -Qtd which removes all orphaned packages. It removed a lot of dependencies which I assumed were no longer needed, but I guess it was wrong.

Emerald isn't having any problems though.

My Operating systems class it taught to deal with Unix based systems. We're using Fedora v20 for it, should be an interesting class. I also started crying when my professor told us about when he first switched to Linux and it was when Doom came out. He was saying how amazing the 3d graphics were at the time to him.

Why Fedora?

Probably what he has the most experience in. He didn't give a reason for his choice really, he might just like it the most.

I've started to use i3 again, and I must say that it's absolutely amazing if you have a huge monitor.
(I have an extra monitor plugged into my laptop because why the forget not)

I also recently set up a file share in my house using Samba. It's running on that old desktop that I turned into a server.

Bump

I'm thinking of reinstalling the OS on my Arch server and this time around using Debian. What do you guys think about it?
It's a really hard decision because I have never used anything Debian-related other than Ubuntu a year or two ago.
I already ran it in a VM and tried some of it's features, including aptitude, apt-get, etc.

Bump. Please don't let this die.

Anyway, I went and installed Debian on my server and I love it. But I don't see why someone would want to use it as a desktop OS. Recently Arch and Manjaro have been really popular among desktop OS'

EDIT: The necrobump to end all threads.

Someone told me to bump this because Windows 10 came out and some people might be switching.
Eh. Maybe.

I'm gonna be switching. Gonna be trying out http://antergos.com/ first, looks pretty sweet.

Antergos is Arch for the lazy. At that point why not just install Ubuntu with whatever desktop you want?

If I were you I'd try Arch. The documentation is amazing and it's a great learning experience. The main selling point of Arch is that it's a blank slate.

I'm a beginner, it's not that I'm lazy I'm just literally incompetent with Linux to the point of not being able to use Arch regularly. I tried Ubuntu and nice-looking variants however I had driver issues that made it extremely unlikely for me to be able to use it long-term.

glad to see the hipster OS thread is back

I've been meaning to install debian on my laptop for a while
the other day I actually tried, but the frickin thumb drive I was using BROKE while I was trying to mount the install image :(
so I'm gonna try again maybe tomorrow with a different thumb drive

the reason for choosing debian specifically is because I use debian for my VPS and I want them to match

I use Debian as my desktop OS and I'm really happy with it.

Ah, okay.
I still recommend diving headfirst into arch though. It's how I learned to use Linux as well as I can now.
Just stick to the wiki and you'll be fine.

And if you end up not liking it, you can always get something else afterwards.
