Lorens makes a pass over where the Octarius was last seen diving. "Snowman, returning to formation." Unable to make anything out in the storm, he returns to altitude and forms alongside Walt.

"I think I might've gotten a splash on the submarine with that last round, but I can't tell for sure," Lorens notes. Feeling a little chilly, he looks around the roosterpit for the pilot heat switch.
: Sonar is registering a hit, and... no, wait, it's leveled out.
: Aw, are you serious? How?
: Maybe they use the same kind of hovering tech their airships use, and it doesn't matter how many leaks it springs.
: Yeah, and how is that supposed to work underwater?
: How is it supposed to work in the air?
: Well- um. They...
: Shut the hell up, Frisk.

"We didn't complete our strike mission yet, I can't speak for the sky Marshall but I wouldn't be surprised if we are sent back out again to attack their fleet."

Walter pauses for a moment then addresses the admiral again

"Mjolnir is withdrawing from the area to land and refuel. Sorry we couldn't have responded sooner."
: I don't think there's much more we can do here. Not today. Even if we were to destroy every ship in the enemy battlegroup, the Imperium would be able to muster a second force of similar size before we could build enough ships to replace those lost in the last hour.

"You and me both," his tone is abruptly harsh.

He drops onto a coffee table in front of Cualli, finally exhausted. His helmet hangs over his pilot bag on the ground.

"I wanted to make sure you knew what to expect," he says in an easier tone.
"If anyone does it, it should be me," she tells him bitterly. "It's personal."

She seems to suddenly remember that Elu is beside her and Cualli sighs deeply, trying to calm herself. "Thank you for telling me," she says, looking down at the floor. Her anger is beginning to subside, but it fails to take any of the bitterness and sadness with it.

Maybe if he'd told me, I could've talked him out of it.

You know why he couldn't do that: they'd think you were an accomplice, you'd get investigated, and they'd find out about everything else you two have done.

She feels her throat tighten when she realizes that the reason she didn't know anything in advance was because Arkhip was trying to protect her from the consequences of his desertion.

"I wish he'd told me," she says, the bitterness fading from her voice. "Maybe I could've... I don't know, talked him down or something." Cualli puts her head in her hands. "That's what I should've said earlier."

But he couldn't, and now he's gone. Forever.

"I wish I could've done something. Anything." She feels suddenly overwhelmed at the notion of this being her fault and keeps her hands over her face to hide her burning eyes from Jaakko. She's not about to show weakness to someone like him. Gus, maybe, or Arkhip, but both of them are gone.

Jaakko nods when Cualli thanks him, though it feels misplaced. He wonders quietly whether or not he should write a memo to Bell asking or labeling Cualli as a desertion risk, considering her interest in Arkhip, while the all the details of it were not known, was still something of an open secret. Short of jumping there was no way Cualli could desert while the airship was moving. He doubted she could use a parachute.

He looks at Elu briefly, who he had not made eye contact with the whole time, and then to Cualli, who is burying her face in her hands.

"I'm not sure what to tell you, the Gods know if it would have made a difference. If the Air Force learned he was a desertion risk, he would have been grounded and put on a short leash,"

He wonders if whatever committee investigating the airliner hijacking would look into his time as flight lead and find that Cualli was fraternizing with an officer, but he dismisses it as paranoia. He had done no wrong, surely, in Aesthia's eyes, nor would an enlisted be any concern of his.

He sits, leering at Cualli and still wearing a look of great displeasure, although his anger was not directed at her. Would she run too?

There's a futility to it because Jaakko was never very good at reading people, which he is aware of.

She nods slowly. "I know. But even that would be better than..." Him leaving me? You're asking to get reported. "...than this. Taking off like he did."

Cualli remembers his aircraft request before his second deployment and mentally kicks herself, her anger resurfacing. "stuff!" Her hands drop from her face to her lap and she stares across at Jaakko. "And he even told me he wanted a Foxbat and the thunderbolts. I went and gave him the stuff he needed and didn't suspect a loving thing," she says, clenching her fists. I didn't know anything and I'm still probably going to get considered an accomplice to his desertion. forget!

But you couldn't have known he was going to desert. You can't blame yourself for him taking advantage of you like that. He didn't tell you anything.

"Gods, I've really messed up, haven't I?"

Walter sighs before talking again

"We will have to see what tomorrow brings then. Hopefully an oppurtunity arises that gives us an upper hand."

Jaakko thinks for a moment.

"If he really didn't tell you anything, then I don't believe you'd be in trouble. A Foxbat and thunderbolts makes perfect sense because we were going to be attacking an airship fleet. He probably took the Foxbat because he knew he'd have an opening to use the fastest aircraft in our inventory. Hell, he could have easily just decided he'd had enough while we were in the air and ran off,"

He looks into the interior of his helmet.

"Well, since he said he wishes he could have told you, I think it was premeditated,"

Would there be a manhunt if she took the bot with her if she decided to split?

With the Aesthian fleet turning back towards their own shores, all aircraft are recalled to the carrier.

Jaakko thinks for a moment.

: Where did he go?

After landing the shikra Walter checks in with Rikard to see how he's doing medically, despite having climbed a rope by himself through a bunch of sea spray.

"I'm glad you still had the strength to climb up, I was worried I'd have to take off and leave you there."

Markus grumbles something to himself about Eremit being an Ark-damned traitor.

Jaakko thinks for a moment.

"It's just... he acted completely fine, and then suddenly he's just... gone." Cualli rakes her memories for any signs that Arkhip might have been planning to desert. She looks across at Jaakko and tries to read his expression. And I'll be gone next, when he reports me as a suspected deserter. Easy way to get rid of a Deltan.

: Where did he go?
"If anyone knew, it would be a pretty shi-- terrible desertion. He wouldn't have told anyone where he was going. If he told people where he was going, it would be too easy to arrest him and give him the punishment he deserves."

She sighs and leans back. "Best case scenario-- if there even is one in this situation-- is he's just run away and is going into hiding somewhere. His Foxbat wouldn't be able to take him to somewhere like Mercana or the Goth's front door." A frown touches the corners of her mouth. "Worst case scenario, he's gone full traitor: hooked up with the Imps and given our thunderbolts over to them and is cozying up by the fire with the enemy right now. I wouldn't doubt that the Imps would give him a hand in defecting if it meant they got something out of it."

"But he's... not like that. At least, I pray he isn't. He wouldn't go that far." Her frown deepens. "Unless it was the easiest way out."

"I'm not an expert on military law,"

Jaakko looks to Elu and Cualli.

"If he wanted to just get away it would make sense that he would jettison his thunderbolts into the ocean to give himself more range. He wouldn't go to Mercana, they'd arrest him and turn him over to us. He would go somewhere neutral, where they would detain him for the rest of the war, unless he wanted to go be a defector,"

He stands, and puts his helmet underneath the hand straps of his pilot bag, and thinks carefully not to say anything smart. It takes a moment.

"Well, take care of yourself and Elu," he adderesses Cualli.

Jaakko looks between the both of them.

"See ya," he says, and turns to walk out.

Cualli nods and shifts uncomfortably after Jaakko leaves. She waits several seconds before turning to Elu and addressing him in a low voice. "If anything happens to me..." She takes a breath. "...chances are, he's going to try to report me and get me investigated because he'll be thinking that I helped Arkhip or that I'll be deserting next, with you or without you. You might get taken away from me, I'll probably end up arrested--"

Her words are coming out quickly now and she cuts herself off, putting her arms around Elu and hugging him tight. "I don't know. Whatever happens, take care of yourself. Be good, okay? I'm going to do everything I can to keep us from getting separated, but if they do take me away, or take you away... I tried to raise you well."

"I wish I could've prevented this somehow," she whispers to Elu before burying her face in the robot's shoulder. She isn't sure what to feel: fear, worry, bitterness, sadness, anger. Cualli gives a shaky sigh and tries to hold in the tears that threaten to come. He said that you were strong.

: That's why you don't skip PT. Thanks again for coming back for me back there.

Kommandant claps you on the shoulder.

Elu wraps his arms around Cualli and gives her a hug.
: Maybe he will realize he is wrong and come back.

A smile touches Cualli's face at Elu's attempt to comfort her. "No, it's too late for that now. If he'd come back earlier, when everyone was out there, there might have been a chance of everyone conveniently overlooking what he tried to do. But now... now, if he comes back, they'll just arrest him. Execute him for treason."

"I think that if he's gone... I don't know. I don't know if I feel better knowing that he's alive and has to live with the guilt of what he's done or if I'd rather him be..." Her throat tightens again. "...I should want him dead, but I don't. I don't think I'd be able to bear knowing he got..."

Her already quiet voice returns to a whisper. "Wherever he is, I hope he's safe. And I hope he feels guilty for the rest of his life for this."

"You're welcome. I don't think your squad would fare too well without you in command..."

he trails off for a moment as a new thought presents itself

"What about Arkhip? I tried to talk him back but he was dead set on leaving."
