Author Topic: Freedom of Speech infringement at my school?  (Read 7687 times)

I always thought extending the acronym, especially past Q, is pointless. Not only because Q covers everything else but also because it doesn't matter - there's no need to list everything someone can be, it's about the general concept of tolerance.
I think I am going to bring in a 30 foot cross and hang it in the hallway, and I'll have anyone that tries to take down the cross thrown out of school for not accepting Him as their lord and savoir

suspension seems pretty unnecessary for tearing down stupid posters

Nobody's getting arrested, and the government isn't involved at all, the school is acting alone. The school can suspend or even expel any student it wants to for any reason, 100% legally. If you don't believe me feel free to look it up.
This is utterly false. Schools cannot hold prejudice for any reason-- be it skin colour or political beliefs.

The case eventually made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which overturned the previous decision and ruled in favor of the students. In oft-cited language, the Supreme Court wrote, "it can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression at the schoolhouse gate."3

I've said this before, the whole concept of freedom doesn't work. By exercising your freedom sometimes you're going to inevitably trample over someone else's

Now imma leave before the stuffstorm

I think I am going to bring in a 30 foot cross and hang it in the hallway, and I'll have anyone that tries to take down the cross thrown out of school for not loving Jesus
I'll donate pasta strainers and you can hang them too
say it's for acceptance of pastafarians

QIA?
queer which is redundant AND a slur and should therefore not be included, interlove which is fine, and probably "allies" which also shouldn't be included. but like sir dooble said it can also be "aloveual" which is perfectly fine
MOGAI is better. you can pronounce it, and it includes everyone who needs to be included
marginalized orientations, gender identities, and interlove
this is where freedom of speech comes in
you do not (and rightly so) have the right to say whatever you want whenever you want. if you go to a school, however, they do have the right to tell you what you can or can't say there. and there's nothing wrong with having rules against acting like a richard
there's no straight club
there's no white person club
because straight people and white people don't need to be told that it's okay to be straight and white
there's no black person club
there probably is some form of club for minority races

Also, no one can have pork at lunch anymore, it might offend the Jews

At least a good half of my school is LGBT, so day of silence went fine and it's been an annual tradition for years now, and many of my teachers were glad that kids are taking a stand to discrimination.

OT: (I'm biloveual so this might be biased.) It's discrimination for the kids to actually rip down the posters since that is (technically) discrimination against LGBT. I feel detention (if not multiple) would be enough for the kids to learn there lesson but that won't change how they feel about others/won't change how they think through what is right or wrong. Suspension is a bit much though. Especially for the kid liking the photo. Is it morally wrong to support the wrong doing? Sure, but giving discipline to them was down right idiotic.

About freedom of speech, that really is something more for the government since school practically can make there own rules to a certain extent. Everyone is entitled to there opinion. It is different though when you act on something to get a reaction out of people.

Yes, but the school does not have the right to mandate your beliefs or your harmless expression. Liking a post outside of school is not the same as bullying another student.

Correct you are

i have nothing against gay people but i don't understand why the forget they have to spread their stuff everywhere. if they didnt do this kind of thing they would be treated like normal people. in my opinion it's mostly a stunt for attention
Basically how I feel. I don't have a problem with someone being a homoloveual, it's the fact that they constantly toss their loveual preference in everyone elses' face that makes it so disgusting.

Maybe we should start putting up posters and form groups in school to promote heteroloveual acceptance too. It only makes it fair, right?

The problem I see is that suspending somebody for liking something on facebook is completely loving stupid, regardless if freedom of speech is a thing or not

My school has a separate prom for lgbtq kids

Stupid really

They have the same rights as everyone else and shouldn't have to avoid something due to pricks being uptight
