Up until Fallout 4 the T-51b was known as the most recent and most advanced pre-war power armor.

There is no logical reason as to why T-60 exists.

Quote from: t-51
The T-51b was developed in the laboratories of the West Tek Research Facility. At the end of the Anchorage Reclamation in January 2077, the armor had become standard issue for American soldiers in the Army's Mechanized Cavalry Regiments.

Quote from: t-60
Developed in early 2077 after the Anchorage Reclamation [1], the T-60 series of power armor was designed to eventually replace the T-51b as the pinnacle of powered armor technology in the U.S. military arsenal. Incorporating design elements from the earlier T-45, the T-60 was deployed domestically among U.S. Army units just prior to the Great War.

???????????

The t-60 wasn't even released in 2077 it was developed in 2077 so there shouldn't have been any working pre-war variants just casually sitting in a train car.

I mean, that makes sense that they could have started development in early 2077, while the T-51b was still the standard issue.
That's not contradictory.

But what doesn't make sense is how many T-60s there are, if they were only designed somewhere between January 2077 and October 2077.

I found up to 3 T-60s already and I'm not even that deep into the game. For a set of armor that wasn't even officially released it should have been considered as a unique variant not a common spawned item.

You've not met the Brotherhood, since you're not doing any of the main storyline, have you?

All BoS Knights in power armour wear T-60.

It's a bit silly, unless the BoS found the means to create their own Power Armours, and were producing T-60s from pre-war blueprints.
But I also believe it has been said that the creation of power armour is too difficult for post-war people?
Then again, as of Fallout 4, Power Armour isn't anything too complex. Even raiders are fitting makeshift power armours over the frames. And would the BoS not have the technology to produce such stuff, especially if they have complete control of the whole of the Capital Wasteland and all its various factories?

I found T-60 armor sets in random pre-war hostile areas untouched by humans.

Yeah, but that's is mostly the fault of Bethesdas loot system, randomising the things that appear.

Although there are T-60s that appear in abandoned Military convoys and things.

What's makes even less sense is that you can find X-01 suits in the same places, because these are Enclave design.
There's a helmet on the BoS Prydwen, but that at least makes sense since the BoS defeated the Enclave in DC.

Weren't the atom cats and the brotherhood of steel the only places you could find t60 armor?
That's what the wiki and at least one other source says, and i haven't found any in randomized power armor sets during my searches for X-01 armor.

There is a T-60 in a military base full of super mutants just casually sitting in the military guard post checkpoint. Those checkpoints where the guard pushes a button to raise a piece of wood to let cars through.

You figure after 200+ years the super mutants would have found that and scrapped it for parts by now.

wtf
i've never met the atom cats

wtf
i've never met the atom cats
South East of the map, south of University Point, East of Jamaica Plains.

I stole a fusion core from an Atom Cat on the street and when he jumped out of his power armor I climbed inside it.

He didn't care I stole his armor right in front of his face.

and another thing
why even HAVE a power armor jetpack if you can't use it to board the prydwen, even if you pack a bunch of nuka colas and bind them to a hotkey you hit an arbitrary height before you run out of AP
man i just wanted to steal tuvok's hat without joining the brotherhood but i guess i'll have to wait for my next playthrough

that final battle on the airfield was a blast though, i had worried that i'd showed up overgeared with a Mk6 X01 suit and upgraded gatling laser but it turned out to be fun as forget

for the stuff about T-60 you see em at the beginning at the 111 checkpoint

yeah, i know that, i'm just saying the lore behind it is hamfisted and i would have rather seen them wearing t51 because i think it looks cooler and im a big babby who doesnt like things that are different
