You can use .50 for the hunting rifle and the bolt-action pipe pistol. So no, there's nothing else to really save them for unless you really like the bolt-action pipe pistol.

When converting a pipe rifle to a .50 caliber you would think the receiver would be much larger. The way it currently looks it looks like the .50 caliber bullet would blow up the entire gun.

It's actually just sorta extremely unrealistic in general. I don't think anyone has ever made a reliable homemade .50 slam rifle, like, ever. But in Fallout we can launch nukes from slingshots so it's whatever.
