lockpicking is just trial and error. hacking has strategy

They are both trial and error since hacking only has a 10 second time out now.

It gets annoying after a while. It kinda breaks the pacing of the game for me. Lock picking takes significantly less time and effort. I do enjoy hacking a little but its just too often and sometimes with just too little reward.

granted there are master locks that are safeguarding a few lockpicks and a measly amount of ammo

I use this http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/266/
I'm pretty strict on "cheating" mods but all this does is remove the slow and boring guessing aspect of it. Doesn't change anything except the time spent.

Id use that if It were on Xbox one.

I never really paid attention to how hacking worked lol

There's definitely still guesswork involved after the first pick

Ironically, the "easier" the terminal is, the more likely you can find words that should be the password according to all the clues you've received, but aren't because they just happen to share the right letters

i remember being really good at hacking in fallout 3 but i guess that's cus i started with 10 intelligence cus im playing a low intelligence char now and god damn even easy terminals take me like 10 minutes

meanwhile lockpicking is a breeze. i perfected that stuff in skyrim

only the first word is a guess

yeah I understand, I actually did the minigames while a lot of people i know just guess. I still find them boring enough to remove.

i like the hacking minigame now that i know how it works

i used to like the lockpicking minigame more because i thought hacking was moving goal posts or something, but now that i actually have the means to clear it and it's not just Bushido's Brute Force Simulator 2287 it's engaging and usually a welcome change of pace before i get right back to minigunning things

I use the "Easy Lockpicking" mod only because the lockpicking ui is non-existent for me.

I'm getting so tired of lockpicking since I've been doing it throughout fallout 3, new vegas, skyrim, and now fallout 4. At this point I just walk away from a lot of locked containers because I don't feel like going through the effort. I'd like a mod that allows instant lockpicking at the cost of 1 bobbypin. We all have like 200 anyway.

you guess the first word. just pick whatever feels right
then, assuming that wasn't the answer, it'll tell you how many letters it has in common with the real password, and you can use that information to make your second pick a lot more likely to be right
after you pick three words (maybe less depending on difficulty? I always play on the easiest difficulty), go around and find all the brackets that have a match, on a single line. it doesn't matter if there's characters between them, as long as you have a ( followed by a ) on a single line, or a [ and a ], or a { and a }, or a < and a >

for example:
|)%.;{[}()>_
has two such strings, {[} and ()

*[[,='<:)!}$
={-:]\;\$VER

does not have any in it

each one of those you find will either remove a word that isn't the password, or refill your tries. removing duds is a lot more common, and a refill isn't guaranteed. but either way, it increases your chances of finding a match

i generally do it on the second try to be safe
