well I would but I think both my gamesharks are locked to other games.  I tried doing a factory reset via sm64 but apparently I have to link it up to the computer???

of course.  you'd be able to fight people locally, and if there are other people better than you, you can learn more from them.

when I fight a guy at my school, I usually end up figuring something out about spacing or options

Snoop around.  See if they're playing whichever game you're interested in.
It's always good to play against other people so long as you don't pick up any bad habits.
