i think people have inferred it from the stuff in his room. though it's pretty heavily implied that mettaton ex was what he was looking for. but yeah ghosts don't have gender in undertale, as indicated by napstablook using "they." mettaton is different because he became corporeal, as apparently most ghosts want aside from napstablook

The pronoun "he" has only been used to describe Mettaton in the game. Don't try and wiggle around being gay for the robot.
