the purpose is not to be difficult, you can tell because the lower your health gets the less damage attacks do (to a rather extreme extent). If it did normal damage you would be really struggling to finish that fight lol
the purpose is for it to be dramatic and tense and, ideally scary

I imagine if hardmode were to ever be made, that damage scaling thing probably wouldnt be there as much (if at all)

I prefer the neutral route. It's the only route where you make more than one decision and actually consider the consequences of your actions.
