Author Topic: What's this "Both hands on the wheel!" nonsense?  (Read 5405 times)

Why even bother, they are phasing out manual and adding in variable speed transmissions. The only time you ever need to learn manual is if you are driving anything pre-2000 or a "sports" car.

In America*

good luck finding automatics in the EU. i sure as hell have never in my life seen one in the netherlands

i learned in manual, and honestly i enjoy driving manual and im happy i know how to do it now

how is this bad
Imagine if you're driving up a steep hill, since the automatic transmission is designed to keep MPG up high, the engine shifts way too forgetin early all the time, meaning you'll either have a very hard time going up the hill, or you wont be able to go up it at all

how is this bad
It is easier for the car to go up a hill with a high rpm and automatics tend to shift early. In case you don't know upshifting lowers your rpm, low rpm on hills can really put a strain on the engine.

both hands on the wheel, whilst your friend acts as a mouth-level cup holder

You can't dedicate a hand to holding other things while driving in the UK, whether that's eating, drinking, or smoking a cigarette.
It's not illegal, but if it's affecting your attention on driving, then you're driving without due care and attention, which is illegal.

And if you are so tired that you can't drive without constantly drinking coffee, then you are far too tired to drive, and it was highly irresponsible for you to drive in the first place.
The visiting friend should have ordered a taxi or taken a bus.

You have break fluid in the cup holder? drink it right now

Automatics are for huge babies. - The entire uk

The visiting friend should have ordered a taxi or taken a bus.
We're not making him take a bus full of loonies. Much less being the type of american that you can ser from a mile away and know he's from the US. And caba are usually a pain in the ass from the airport especially to tourists so someone had to go.

He's fine, I'm fine, we're all fine. You cigarettes are just butthurt about my radical driving skills.

One of you could have taken the bus to meet him and taken it back with him.
Whatever option you could have chosen, it was irresponsible for you to go while so clearly tired.
And moreso to then distract yourself by holding a cup, drinking, and driving at the same time.

Had there been a sudden incident in front of you, are you certain you would have been prepared, given how tired you were, and not being in a position to get full control of the vehicle?

Yes of course. Not the first time I do this. It was the first time that someone told me "Both hands on the wheel" so here we are.

driving manual is like vaping, people don't shut up about how they drive manual

Automagic is boring and it's not like I'm spreading "I drive a manual!" in every thread. This thread was made about how I see it impossible to put both of my hands on the wheel if I'm driving a manual so your argument is completely invalid.

is this what the thread is about? i thought it was about you driving with your knees like no one ever should

Would you rather have me put down the coffee and fall asleep?

Coffee doesn't actually keep people awake unless it was their first time drinking anything with caffeine before.

Once you get use to coffee it won't do stuff to keep you awake. People who believe they need coffee to function have been fed lies.

Just because you do it more than once doesn't mean it's safe... I'm not going to say much about the both hands thing considering I drive with one hand myself.
