Saying he 'shot someone' is kind of an overstatement. Bullet wounds to the leg are regularly fatal. This guy shot someone with a starter gun, which fires a less-deadly projectile at less-deadly speeds. As far as I can find on the internet, nobody has ever died to a starter gun. Yes, it's still a pretty grievous assault crime, but I don't think someone would get put away for more than a couple years for this in the US (assuming it was their first offense).
But like, look at the thesis of this article: what they're saying is that the courts are bending reality to protect migrants, when in reality they put him through the system like anyone else and gave him two years. That isn't a terribly long sentence, but remember where this incident actually happened. Eastern European countries don't like to put people in prison for life, because their philosophy is that you can actually rehabilitate them.
