Author Topic: 'Nostalrius' widely recognised World of Warcraft private server taken down.  (Read 5641 times)

I have recently attained permission from 'Badspot' to create this discussion topic without being put under any form of strain.

Private server Nostalrius had been built solely around hosting World of Warcraft's first ever retail edition, which is also widely regarded as "Vanilla World of Warcraft". Blizzard has been, for over 10 year's, releasing occasional expantion's toward's World of Warcaft every once in a while. Whilst these drastically changed core mechanic's of the game, they also brought new life into i't as well. As World of Warcraft grew more and more apart from it's original counterpart, the demand for legacy server's grew more and more as well.

The team that surrounded Nostalrius Begins had been composed of about thirty volunteers, whilst the server itself accumulated roughly around 800,000 registered player's, i't also achieved an active playerbase of around 150,000 player's.

As of recently, their service provider had received a formal letter written by french and US lawyers asking them to shutdown their services because of Copyright Infringement prior to a lawsuit. As soon as this information had been received, the final shutdown of their World of Warcraft realms was planned, as requested.

sucks but i guess i can't fault blizzard too much. would've been nicer to just overlook it unless they actually plan on making a legacy server

Until Blizzard makes their own vanilla servers, playing vanilla WoW, or any private servers is against WoW ToS.

Doesn't matter how popular the server was.

To what extent are we allowed to talk about this server?

Is i't alright if I could create a discussion topic about Blizzard taking down World of Warcraft private server 'Nostalrius'
Yeah

Like are we allowed to actually fully talk about the server or just the event of Blizzard taking the server down?

I'm probably most certain that with the intention of allowing this topic to exist, Badspot also had in mind of allowing any form of discussion surrounding the matter.

Alright, I will air on the side of caution just in case. I can't really discuss too much about it tonight as I'm about to go to sleep but I will put what I feel about the topic tomorrow.

Honestly the way I see it, the expansions (especially Cataclysm for all it's drastic changes to the 2 main continents) should've effectively made Vanilla WoW abandonware. An effectively dead game that can never be played as it once was unless a PS for it was made like Nostalrius.

I thought that was just a joke video Jon was doing to parody H3h3's "THE LEAFY RANT".

wait why would you need badspots' permission to post this topic

is it cause this game/spinoff/adaptation isn't legal?

theres a "blockland classic" thread

this is basically the same but for WoW

It's not abandonware, most of the content is still in Retail WoW. You can still play retail WoW and join a classic raiding group.

Blizzard lost profits because of the server.

It's theft.
It's illegal.

This was hosted on World of Warcraft realms, the server browser of World of Warcraft

idk if anyone is trying to argue that blizzard isn't within their right to do this, it's just a debate about whether they should

if it's a server specifically made because people don't like the game in its current state and want to play it as it originally was, blizzard isn't losing profits because of the private server, they're losing profits because they aren't fulfilling that demand. those people wouldn't play retail anyway, so i don't think it's think you can say blizzard lost profits from them. of course, i'm sure there are also people that played on the server just because it's free and retail isn't, even though retail has a lot more content, and blizzard would lose profits there.

but in any case it's obviously a legal breach and a potential competitive threat, so i can understand why blizzard would want it shut down. just sucks for the people who don't get to play the game they want to. disclaimer: i have never played WoW so i don't know the extent to which content is still accessible or how the game has changed so i'm going off of trust that there has actually been legitimate changes to the core game as people seem to be saying
