Author Topic: the homebrew thread - jailbreaking your consoles to freedom  (Read 10249 times)

it had to be done eventually.

what is homebrew?
homebrew, in a sense, is unverified, unsigned code/programs for a console. they weren't ever officially released/published, and are made by independent developers, or developer groups. they aren't able to run on most consoles without lots of modifications.

formatting for consoles will include basic info, and a link to a good softmod guide i found. any other info you can find on your own. these guides may or may not require money to perform.

piracy is not condoned nor allowed on this forum, obviously. don't ask.

consoles:

dreamcast
the dreamcast doesn't have too much in terms of homebrew, but you can backup your games to a SD card, change your region, and do a little bit more.

original xbox
the original xbox, released in 2001, has a lot of various homebrew and software to use on the xbox. you can use trainers to cheat vidya games, FTP files onto the hard drive, use it as a media center, a various amount of things. you can even rip dying discs to a new, bigger hard drive if need be.

ps2
another console with a bit to do. there's a media center, you can backup your games to a HDD, and run other various homebrew.
buy freemcboot memory card

the ps2 has two different models. thus, they have different guides.

psp
another handheld device with a lotta homebrew. you can improve it using various CFW configurations, use homebrew programs to improve the experience, use custom themes, and use cheats on games without an external device.

ps vita
handheld. stuff. you can run the old PSP homebrew on some firmware, allowing you to play any PSP game without relying on ps vita's playstation store, and in other cases, run various homebrew like homebrew games and such.

wii
the easiest of the consoles to softmod, the wii allows you to do a lot. there's a media center, being able to read dvds (specific models only), reviving the nintendo wi-fi servers, and lots, lots more.

let me explain since this doesn't need a guide link. this does not work with wii u's vwii mode:
1. ensure you're on 4.3U/E/J/K (you should be), and you have a functioning SD card plugged into your PC (this is required)
2. go to your internet settings, then look for your mac address
3. go here: https://please.hackmii.com/
4. select your version/region, and press your mac address. leave the hackmii installer checked.
5. verify the captcha. wire cut doesn't matter.
6. put the files from the zip it downloads onto the root of your SD card.
7. put the SD card into your wii.
8. go to the wii message board, then move back a day. you should see a red letter with a bomb in it. click it.
9. congrats. you're in the hackmii installer. install the homebrew channel, exit, and enjoy sweet homebrew. find other resources on your own.

wii u
another console with lots. you can make your disc titles digital titles, install CFW and a virtual NAND to keep your wii u safe from destruction, and other various homebrew.

softmod guide here

3ds
the 3ds is the ultimate console for homebrew. you can run lots of homebrew, clean up notifications, improve how it runs, there's a lot, and i mean a LOT. but it's complicated, and requires quite a bit of time to setup. take patience, and you'll have a lot of fun with the aftermath.

this is the only good softmod guide. do not use anything else

that's about it for guides. now, for this thread, you can discuss various homebrew, giving help on homebrew and what to do after you softmod, and other various things.

i'm almost certain this thread isn't breaking any rules. there are no mentions of anything that are against the piracy rule in this thread.

if there are, let me know so i can correct them.

enjoy!

ps3 also supports homebrew, but it requires 3.55, no higher or lower. among the features the ps3 supports is media center, bringing back OtherOS functionality but this time with 3d gpu drivers and of course a decent selection of homebrew.

you can only softmod if you're on 3.55 or lower, on a lower firmware you can just update to 3.55, on a higher firmware you gotta hardmod some special thing that's more expensive then a ps3 from ebay and even then it doesn't work on newer ps3s so just buy a dedicated ps3 for it if you wanna do it you tit.

this is one of the reasons i didn't include it. i mainly was looking for something that didn't require hardmodding to do at certain levels, since most ps3s nowadays are above 3.55.

i could make another post regarding all those/edit the OP, but due to its complexity i don't think i will.

Are you seriously supporting piracy?

Are you seriously supporting piracy?

if you mean the ripping of games to a hard drive, when those discs eventually get broken or scratched, the game is essentially unplayable. copying your own game to your hard drive is legal since you own the game.

nowhere did i even mention performing acts of piracy in this thread.

if you think all homebrew is piracy, then please learn what homebrew is first.

Are you seriously supporting piracy?
If you believe this has anything to do with piracy, it's more proof on the top of the pile that suggests you never fully mentally developed like the other kids.

Are you seriously supporting piracy?

good job lord tony you've officially proven yourself not worth talking to.
not only that but lately you've been acting like a total handicap, or, in human tongue, a loving troll

Are you seriously supporting piracy?
Homebrew ≠ Piracy
Homebrew is used for other things, such as cutomization, running emulators etc. (the list goes on)

whoa, that's pretty nice, albeit lengthy.
i'll add it to the xbox section as an alternate tutorial.

you guys do realize tony's a troll right?

totally needed a thread

https://wiiu.guide/

a new guide for the wii u and homebrewing is now available from plailect, the same person who brought you https://3ds.guide

this guide will now replace the github link and i recommend anyone who wants to wii u mod to use this instead.

Some people were actually able to bring the Sega Dreamcast back online. They used a cool method called the DreamPi.

I actually want to try to make a DreamPi and play Quake III online. Sounds really fun.
