I'm seeing a lot of talk about people wanting to ban AR-15s specifically, which makes me curious:
So, my question to those who are pro-gun control: Without looking anything up, based just off of what you know right now, what is it about this one model in specific that leads to so much discussion about banning this one model in specific

It's an incredibly popular rifle with an even more incredibly modular design. When things become as popular as the AR-15, they sort of become the poster child for what they represent. When people think "Semi-auto rifle", they think the AR-15 most of the time.

It's not really because the gun is scarier, or deadlier, or easier to get, it's just because popularity segues into recognition. People are about as familiar with the AR-15 as they are with say, a glock. Along with that, general familiarity breeds misconceptions, people who don't know better often assume or gather wrong information about popular things.

^^^ better worded

Simply put, its easy to demonize that which you understand little of but hear about so much.

I knew all that already, that's why I was asking for sometime in support of banning it to explain it in their own words

And yeah misinformation is so widespread. "AR-15" was trending on Twitter last night and I browsed around a bit before I quit out of disappointment. This one guy was like "why does a civilian need such a large caliber" and it's just like what? .223 is loving tiny caliber

People tend to look at the casing rather than the projectile. I don't think I know of anyone here who actually wants it banned, or they're too afraid to voice it. I don't blame them.

misinformation/ignorance is going to the downfall of this country
my twitter feed is full of people wanting to ban the rifle, in this case, was already illegal for the shooter to own

That's kind of how I figured it too. There's too many outlets set up to tell you what you want to hear and what you don't.

even then large calibers are good to have because even though real life isn't like The Division where you fire at an attacker for five minutes and then he decides to fall over dead, sometimes attackers are so big that they can be shot with smaller bullets and still keep going

does that make owning a .50 cal machine gun reasonable? no
does that mean we should ban anything above pea-shooting levels? also no

Of course, but even the cartridge as a whole is fairly small.

People seem to be under the impression that these big bad """military style assault weapons""" shoot these heavy duty """military strength bullets""" but of course anyone who knows guns can tell you the reality is that even popular civilian hunting cartridges are more powerful than a .223

Civilian hunting rifles can blow your forgetin head off yeah

Tbh, mental illness probably did play a role in this, but it's still monumentally stuffty for Annoying Orange to default to the most non-actionable explanation possible whenever a non-brown dude commits shootings.

this guy can go forget himself with a cactus

why does only atheism breed this type of handicapation
