So update on this, Spirit Airlines has now testified in court before a judge that "recent geopolitical events" has destabilized their business and caused the cost of operations to grow too high for the discount pricing system they offered. Any guess as to what geopolitical even could have interrupted air travel and jacked-up the price of fuel so much it would force an airliner out of business?

Meanwhile, private citizens are taking it upon themselves to start a crowdfunding purchase of Spirit Airlines. The opening pledge is $45 and already tens of millions of dollar have been pledged, yet this is still a far cry from the over a billion or so needed for a total buyout.

It would be interesting to have publicly owned transit as a competitor to the airlines. Think the way the USPS keeps fedex and UPS from being able to overcharge shipping fees by having a state-sponsored competitor.
