Dwarf Fortress

I always seem to run outta food eventually or my Fisher keeps fishing turtles and they sit around and die and thats it.
Make farms.

Did, run outta seeds.
Make underground farms. First press "z" and go in the Kitchen tab. Disable Plump Helmets for brewing (so that Brewing becomes red colored for it). When plump helmets are eaten regularly, you get Seeds from them, but if they're brewed you lose the seed so you eventually run out. Plump Helmets are cheap, but they can basically feed your entire fortress for a very long time, at least until you start getting picky nobles that want prepared meals and stuff.

For fishing you need a FIshery to process whatever you catch, otherwise it will be unedible and it will sit there and rot.

For Hunting you need a Butcher's Shop in order to process the meat.

Also Rky you can keep your fort logs in here, I don't mind anyways.

Strange, on the forums someone was told that brewing still yields a seed.

Yeah I think its cooking that removes the seeds.

It had been several days now and I felt my forces were well prepared to do battle with the foul goblins, so I let open my front door and watched as they ran in to their deaths. The first three got caught in my cage traps, and the other three marched into my menacing spike traps which bore holes in their limbs and caused their death. During the dieing my stupid bonecarver decided to take a walk in the entrance with her baby and got shot at, but she'll live(my glass maker tried this as well). Either way, the enemy has been defeated and Fortress Hammerflag once again reigns supreme!

Now comes the cleanup. The goblins didn't actually do anything but in an attempt to get my dwarves to drink something( I couldn't brew because  as soon as I would make a barrel they would fill it with seeds and plump helmets ) I ended up flooding a lot of my fortress with 2/7 water.

edit: Damnit! I just got ambushed again!

Reserve some barrels.

I've now lost 7 dwarves to mixed causes--  thirst(I blame the dwarves for this one), and goblins(I blame the goblins and the dwarves for this one). One of them is throwing a tantrum and shooting at the goblins somewhat ineffectively.

I plan to blame my mason for half of the deaths because they actually were his fault. Bastard was 3 feet from a wall I ordered to be built that would've saved them and ignored the order.

Needless to say, I plan to kill him after this is over.

In the meantime I'm just refueling my traps then I will let the goblins die.

My current problem is i cant freaken advance anywhere because im not getting migrants.

oh and do i need to assign a special job for the fishery workplace?

or will my normal fisher do it?

Edit!

Aswell how the heck do i make a well..

like how do i know if im above water and crap step by step would be nice!

Hammerflag has hit a crCIA, our dwarves are dieing off and tantruming constantly. I blame the dwarves because there is plenty of clean water now.

Ok i'm boned.

Winter just came along and my pond is covered with ice, i have no drinking water and booze is gone.

So ya... im dead, Aswell i cant even make a well because i can't make a dam chain!

HURR MAKE A BREWER PLACE AND BREW YOUR PLUMP HELMETS

I just abandoned my fortress. Was doing great, then I ran low on food. Everyone went crazy and killed each other.

I feel like making a dwarven superstructure
IE: flood a desert valley.
I'll try for at least 4 Z level deep water.

I have magma, but how do I get to it without killing my dwarves?
Channel above it?

You should consult the Dwarf Wiki

You'll need to keep out the Magma creatures if you have any though, just barricade them with Bauxite Fortifications or Metal Bars that will let magma seep through but keep the imps at bay. Then on the higher Z level (above magma level) you can build a simple stone wall on top of your fortifications/bars. Be careful if there are Fire Men, they can destroy buildings. Best to try and cage it/them before attempting anything.

Help, I'm under attack by a pack of at least 30 Weegees, they're about as strong as wolves and I embarked with Hobbits instead of dwarves. And I've only just embarked.
