The problem has be around since at least 1.1. I first noticed it on Zombie Pigmen, seems it effects all mobs. It doesn't always happen, though, and I don't know what causes it. Basically the left side of a mobs head is oddly nearly black.

Edit2: For some reason, the Zombie Pigman texture is forgeted up ingame. Look:

I just don't like texture packs because they change minecraft too much :l
