Jeb removed all the old chest textures from the game in 12w21a. Basically, he made more room.

On another note, I hope he sorts the Creative List again before 1.3. Emeralds and all down at the bottom is disorienting.

I was just checking the items.png. Turns out, Jeb didn't chance the texture to make Emeralds. The old ruby coin like texture is still there. He might still be adding this.

Tekkit's just like hosting a Bukkit server, Yogbox isn't SMP, Hack/Mine is like Vanilla server+installing the mod.

Well, they're still in the texture file. Maybe he's planning on using them. Furthermore, maybe he's planning to make Emeralds work as tools... That's a bit of a stretch, but in the update bullets, he put currency item in quotations... So... Just pointing that out.

i think we should just use gold nuggets as currency. it makes sense.
