I'd get some obsidian but I haven't found any lava, not to mention I can't figure out how to get water to cool it off with

If you don't have any diamonds then build the whole bridge out of obsidian, that you mine with a golden pickaxe

You could always do the sand glitch while underground. While making a straight tunnel, dig just to the right 3 blocks high. You will need sand or gravel. Stand just less than halfway in, more in the tunnel, then place two sand in the 3 block high section. You should be able to see half inside the ground and easily locate lava.
