Put redstone on the side that is facing the door, not on top.
Then make a trail of dust to the block where the door is on and do it on the side.

Not sure though.

And another thing, how is it possible to operate the door with the pressure plate on the surface and a few blocks away from the door. I don't want redstone visible on the surface.

Put a redstone wire one block under the pressure plate.  Lead the trail directly under the door, where you will have a redstone torch directly one block under the door.  To make the torch rely on the current, have it one block below the trail.

D--------(door)
B--------(block)
T--------(torch)
[]--------(trail)
T--------(torch)

This method also allows for vertical currents.

On one of my old worlds I had iron double doors that opened with pressure plates inside and a button outside. It's more convenient that way. Mind you wiring that to work was a clusterforget. I might try it again sometime.

Edit: No visible wiring, all behind walls or under floors or above ceilings.

Guys, what has happened since I left Minecraft at Christmas.
I haven't logged in for ages.
What's new in 1.2?
Cake
squids
Dye
stuff like that

Would anyone here be interested watching a Dual Let's Play with me and my younger, non-minecraft-educated sister?
