You can think of redstone as an electrical current.  When you hit a lever with redstone connected to it, it sends the current to an object.  Repeaters delay that current.  Connect the redstone to a door to open it from a distance, or tnt to blow it up from a distance.

Buttons don't make it stay open forever, unlike levers.

someone mspaint draw me a map of how a switch track can use redstone torches as direction signals, using 1 lever.

no powered track or launching needed, this is going to be for a coal powered train.

youtube videos are not very helpful at explaining how they do it. a simple outline of the items is good enough

I can just explain to you for as I cannot draw you one at the moment.

By default the track will be turning either left or right, when there's no current applied.

Once a current is applied it will switch directions. Seeing as torches apply currents, you can make it so a lever can lead redstone wire underground to a torch so that when the level  is pulled the torch will activate.

You're kidding right?

It's in two different places. I'm not kidding.

Curse has been down for a day. This sucks.

Once Curse is back up, check out BuildCraft. It's loving amazing. :o
You can make pipes to transport stuff from chests, you can build automatic mining wells and quarries, and much more. :D
There are a couple addons for it that I think are must-haves.
1. Redstone Timers or whatever it's called, it's linked in the topic. Basically it's a bunch of spinning timers for redstone that you can change the intervals on. Also has NOR gates and some other stuff.
It's essential for BuildCraft because it's built off of pulses. You need to pulse redstone current to stuff.
2. Redstone pipes. When an item goes through it, it will power redstone. :D
