Well, my brother made one like that, and I find it to be A HELL OF A LOT easier to just find diamond and mine the obsidian.

molding lava seems like a lot more of a hassle than just mining obsidian anyway. I suppose it's good if you really can't find diamond, but I've not had this problem.
