I guess Notch added the gold piece for being the new money of Minecraft.

1. They are used for making gold ingots, fill up a crafting bench square with them, and they are dropped by zombie pigmen.
2. They already have a name, "Gold Nugget".

I guess they could be used as money, but I don't think it would be worth much.
