It spawns in Strongholds and is indestructible as far as I can tell.

If you're using 1.9 Pre-Release 3, then look for giant glass towers. They mark strongholds. :o

As Beta said, Notch put giant glass towers that extend to the top of the map over strongholds for debugging. Just look for those.

In Beta 1.9 Pre-release 3, putting your cursor over Air Portal blocks (Not the frame, the actual portal parts) in your inventory will crash you. The above fixes the crash, and only the crash. No extra doo-dads.
