Could happen, didn't they do that around the halloween update last year? I'd say minecraft.net has gotten better servers since then.

Long time before, the minecraft servers wasn't stable at all, there was crashes.

Yeah, either they crashed and Anonymous took the blame, or they actually took down the servers. Either way, hope the servers don't go down for whatever reason.
