engines are too slow and tedious to maintain, and they take up too much space

A redstone torch takes up one block.
A redstone engine takes up one block.

The combustion engines are the only tedious ones, but you can make them fully automated.
You can also build the engines underground, and use power teleport pipes and conductive pipes to get the energy where you need it to go.
