It adds a saw tool which can be used to cut normal blocks into a variety of smaller pieces which can be used for tons of stuff. Like this.
The aforementioned saw is really cool, but it also adds ruby, sapphire, and emerald. These are used to make tools that have the same mining speed as diamond but are only as durable as iron. They also can't mine obsidian.

I know about all that, I use RedPower on a daily mfn basis it's great stuff

a while ago I watched an old Yogscast video where the guy was trying out Industrialcraft
and he had this big, complicated, confusing machine setup that turned glowstone dust (maybe something else? I can't remember) into diamonds, and then back into powder, and then back into diamonds, and back into powder, and back into diamonds, etc. (because a bug caused that to make a higher number of diamonds than it should have)
but once he got to the wires part he didn't know wtf he was doing
