actually, you can put lava under a crafting bench. the crafting bench will burn and go out, but the never disappear. it's not as good as a nether fire because it's sporadic, but it does the job if you're in need.

Ha, after returning from another failed attempt to locate cassiterite in TFC, I looked up the metals on the wiki and found out that the 10 stacks of sphalerite I found while on vacation was actually zinc, another tier 0 metal
