I suck at this game...

*Spoilers!!*

Search under mountain spots, usually the chambers are 3-12 z levels above the lowest z level. There are plenty of trace veins spanning the z levels above the chambers, these are small veins and they're pretty safe game. If you hit thicker veins you'll know the chambers aren't too far off. Try mining upwards once you find anything at all and start excavating from the top.

The best way to find the stuff is to make large square mining designations. Hold shift, drag across an area, repeat horizontally and vertically a few times until you have a nice area of square lines designated.

Once you find some you "rake" the area, basically strike lines horizontally or vertically, each separated by 2 squares so you end up revealing everything. As precaution, you would want to avoid joining these tunnel lines except atleast at one of their ends to let you miners actually get to them. You should make sure there will be only 1 thin entryway to the site since you'll have to scramble to block off all exits if you unearth something by accident. You CAN'T build walls in the chambers or close to them, but you can still build walls a ways away. It is entirely possible to have a miner switch to mason (while removing all other masons via their labors) and having that miner build a wall before the chamber things even notice.
See, am I looking for tall or short mountains, since my entire local can't be either am I supposed to have partly short mountains?

To capture the HFS demons, just cause a small cave-in with a floor tile on top of a support rigged to fall at the switching of a level, the dust will knock them out. If they're on cage traps, they'll trigger and catch the demons, even though the demons can't be caught by traps.

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Uh, when you look at the  higher Z-Levels which lie outside, your minimap will depict mountainous regions of your local area in a certain way (usually it's gray triangle tiles or something). You dig anywhere dirrectly underneath these to find the HFS. It'll be somewhere under those.

Note that HFS is only generated on mountain/volcano peak areas. If you start in a rolling plains area that happens to have a few tiny mountains that don't pop up on the bigger map then you won't have HFS there. Of course, if you got Site Finder to find HFS for you and you didn't move the location then you should be fine.

HFS?

damn you goblin raiders murdering my war dogs!

Unzip it on your damn DF folder... duh, also, use Mayday's

Mayday's is the only tileset I can use, screw the hard-core-ness of ASCII. It makes my eyes bleed.

EDIT: Ohdang, I didn't notice that was a loving major bump. Sorry :3

Don't be.

Hopefully the new update will be out in January.

How the hell can my siege engineers be stupid enough to load a ballista, walk in front of the arrow and fire the weapon?

Also, gruesome death mechanics caused his head to fly across the room and his body to explode into about 10 pieces.

Argh I need to learn to play :c

Once you get the basics and a realistic tileset the entire gameworld seems possible for you to overcome.
