Right click the L4D2 icon in Steam go to properties, then hit the local Files tab then hit the Verify integrity of Game cache... and let it do its thing, it'll probably re-download 1 file and you're good to go.

Sadly, I'm not surprised. The L4D series always disappoints us by making it look like it would have an actual story to it. Then just throws us from point a to point b constantly.
