A) Hardmode only applies to a single world, not your character or every world you own
B) I thought the mode was only triggered when you destroyed a demonic altar with the pwnhammer. If that's the game, then don't do that.

hardmode is activated when you kill the WoF, destroying a demon altar is just the next logical choice

Oh, oh well. The rest was still correct :)

I presume the world that the WoF was killed in in this instance was a multiplayer world. Since multiplayer worlds are loaded seperately to worlds you use in single player then nothing in the 'main' world will have changed unless you overwrite the save.
