You're handicapped, I flooded hell with a pit from the surface that was two blocks wide. Flooding the entire place is a bad idea anyways, it's a pain in the ass to fight bone serpents and imps while swimming through water because all of it will just sit on top of the lava.
I've flooded Hell using the ocean several times and I've never had any serious trouble. Flipper item + Muramasa and the occasional spamming of the Sun Fury pretty much makes short work of imps and serpents.

I only drained the ocean because it was funny and turning hell into a swimming pool was always one of my short term goals.

If you're going for obsidian just find lava the level right above hell and make yourself an endless stream of water. Or hey just make a obsidian machine using that same exploit.

Proof of concept:

Everyone is using the official wiki right? Not that piece of stuff Wikia one? Right?

http://wiki.terrariaonline.com/

I used to use the wikia but then I started using the official wiki.

Sorry for it being a bit fuzzy, I am too lazy to re-size it properly.

But anyway.

This is how it works.

You put water in the top left shelves and it begins to duplicate as it falls down the pyramids.

the water will eventually collect in the storage tank.

Then you put the lava in the bottom right shelf where it also duplicates.  Falling to the top layer of the water.

Now the lava doesn't change the water level because there is a source of water above it, keeping it on the same spot, so you can mine obsidian from one spot.

Another note.

Somehow i got the idea that corrupting it would be fun..
