I mined like 2000 sand in just a few minutes once. Just stand near the bottom of a pile and you gets tons.

I think it's actually an issue with my game, but I'm not sure. If I mine the bottom of a pile of sand, it just rapes like 50 of it per hit.

You do realize that when sand falls, it duplicates itself? When it falls the block will break and spawn another block beneath it, but it will drop itself at the same time. So you can literally cover the entire map in sand 250 blocks deep with about 1000 sand.
