Skeletron can only be KILLED once per world. If you fail to defeat him, wait until the next night and then you can awaken him again.

It's said by the official wiki, not the junk that first comes on Google, that Skeletron does not respawn.

Yeah, one way is:

I have a strategy for duegon, at night, make a house outside with bed (no this is not about defeating Skeletron), set spawn point there, make a chest, get torches, then run your faith through the duegon looting chests, no worries in dieing, simply put your loot (coins) in the chests and be happy, althrough when you die you indeed lose half coins, but it's mostly for the items in the duegon.

I got a bunch of items from doing this, including the Muramasa.

Incorrect, they are NOT insta-kill. They do alot of damage, but I kept getting hit by them, and died at fifth or so hits from three heads.

got 2 ivy whips was pretty easy hardest part was to find the jungle so i mined from the left end to the right end (on a large map) lol 700depth

You could have just looked on the other side of the spawn that doesn't have the dungeon
