Boats would be cool but wouldn't really serve much purpose. I think there should be a world gen to create ocean like conditions within the map instead of just the edge.

Probably planted those trees on grass in worldgen, then sand came afterwards.

EDIT: As you can see by the fact that there is no base to the trees. I am willing to bet that if you dig down, you will come across dirt with grass pretty quickly.
