I'm pretty certain that streaming can be done with software, you don't need for a capture card

Well, if you are on playstation or xbox i think you need a capture card. I have WON an Elgato game capture HD wich includes livestreaming.

if i streamed half of it would be me screaming at my computer for not functioning and the other half really laggy, jerky gameplay on low settings with random pauses where i can't control my game and my player or vehicle walks/drives around incoherently until i get shot or wait long enough

I suggest OBS (Open broadcast software) with Snaz. Snaz gives you extra features 'n stuff.
I use that one too.
