Dwarf Fortress Megathread! - Necro'd enough to count as a vampire

I want to make a legit adventurer so I decided to take on the task of killing a Pikeman for someone, but the problem is they say it's to the southeast, and when i try to fast travel I can't see any sort of house or indicator that the guy is there, so I don't know how far southeast.
Someone help me.

Press shift + Q.

Then you can use Z and it will place something over the map on where to go. If you are really close, it will place it on a smaller map.

Shift Q and then do "zoom to selected"
then in fast travel press M and then go to where the shift q thing told you it was

i keep aiming for the legs but that doesnt work too well

I've got a nice fort going. There's stockpiles, a dining room and meager quarters for everydwarf. Gonna find out how to farm so I have enough food and ale to keep the spirits up.

I'm currently in a flat area with lots of silty clay. what's a good method to strike stone and get minerals if I don't have any available cliffs for mining?

build a downward staircase.

Dig down, of course. You'll hit either caverns or a useful ore eventually.

What's a good way to keep up food? I seem to have many dwarfs and my farms aren't producing that much. I can't just keep collecting berries.. Or is that what I am supposed to do?

Hunters hunting for food year-round.

How do i get my farms to actually produce food?
As in how do i set it to grow plump helmets
