Author Topic: The Computer Megathread  (Read 490284 times)

Yay Ethan!
I just made a thread but then Herpaderp redirected me here. So just letting you know he's doing his job.
Here's what I wanted to know.

So, I'm stuck with this computer until February.
Would it make life more bearable if I maxed the RAM out with this?
It takes forever for Google chrome to load up, and it's not helping that I'm on a wireless PCI card.
Also, I'm using Windows XP professional SP3 now.

Tl;dr: This computer is slow, would this help?
More RAM, better CPU and a non-integrated graphics card. And a backup/reformat/restore might be in it's place too, assuming that you haven't done that recently.
Also, even 2GB is a bit weak by today's standards (at least for gaming).

Actually, your best bet might be to just do a reformat and wait until february to get a whole new computer.

If it's taking too long to load webpages, it would be better to get a wired connection, is that an option at all?
I doubt the connection is the culprit.

I installed the OS a month ago and instantly got AVG 2012.
But, I'll do it if I don't lose anything in the process.

Oh. Which version of Windows, btw?

This one

All right. I was thinking of using compressed air. Why no vacuum, exactly? Alsooo, where should I take it to do this? It has a sizable layer.
Static electricity.

Alright. Say I was stupid as hell and wanted to take apart a Microprocessor. Not remove it from the computer, but take the actual chip apart.
What would happen or is it not possible.
It's set in silicon, good luck, lol.

Yep. However I must add that it won't make as much difference as you are hoping. You'd need to upgrade CPU, and maybe hard drive speed.

Where are good places to get cheap (yet still descent) monitors?
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=20&name=LCD-Monitors
Sort by lowest price. Acer, AOC and Asus monitors are great quality and cheap. Most of the monitors there are good though.

To expand on this, a processor is an integrated circuit sandwiched between a circuit board full of connecting pins and a piece of metal called a heat spreader. The pins plug into the motherboard and move data between the processor and the rest of the computer. The heat spreader helps evenly spread out heat across the heatsink for more efficient cooling.

You can't break it into any smaller bits than that since it is an integrated circuit. It's literally a wafer thin piece of solid silicon that has an extremely small circuit chemically etched into it. About all you can do with it is smash it into dust.

It's also not a stupid idea. Taking stuff apart is a good way to learn. If you have a spare processor that doesn't work anymore, feel free to take it apart before you recycle it.

If you can't spend that much....

Eh, I don't really like the look of the second case, and the first one is too expensive.

Actually, I recalculated my budget, and now I can and really want to buy the first case:

Good choice. Good case, and looks lovey.

Lowest priced monitor $80.

A monitor for that price sounds like it would melt after using it for five seconds.

*EDIT*
Question: how hard is it to replace decorative LEDs in a case?

How the hell did you break an LED?

How the hell did you break an LED?
I didn't. I'm just asking in case I want to use a different color for aesthetic purposes.
