There was never an option to just add your game to steam, till Greenlight.

Greenlight IS that option to add your game to steam, but the community has to agree.
How were indie games added before then?

Someone find cucumberdude's (I think it was his) picture of his jail escape, where 30 players were in that orange area

so? theyre good action shots
yeah but it'd be very misleading and decieving. the game doesnt have maps like that anymore. people would be asking why they aren't in the game and might turn down getting the game out of dissapointment and misunderstanding.

I wasn't advertising it, I barely even use it anymore.

How were indie games added before then?
One of two things happened:
1. Steam got interested in a game and asked the developer to publish to Steam.
2. The developer brought the game to Steam's attention and they decided that it would be good enough to go on Steam.

IDEA: Go through the DOF screeshot topic and pic out some of those maybe?
