It's a very common style among indie developers, mainly because

because easy
because budget

and the people here don't have the money, time, or skills to make anything too extravagant. Not that the pixel art style is bad, I actually happen to favor it quite a bit.

My reason for pixel art?  Pretty much everything I do imitates either NES or SNES graphics.  Anything else just doesn't feel right somehow.
