"Oxide, defensive," I radio.

I roll left and pull back the stick. I disengage the AoA limiter and engage the airbrakes. The throttle is cut next. Hopefully the Viggen will overshoot.

The AoA limiter helps to prevent the aircraft from stalling, so you know xxxxkill. Having it off can help you to turn tighter, but you run the risk of stalling.

We all know what an AoA limiter is.

the name sort of tells the reader

We all know what an AoA limiter is.

I got stuff on last time for being technical.

You got called out last time for using silly-sounding slang terms, not for engaging a system anyone who's played a jet fighter video game has probably heard of.

"stuff. Destroyer got me good. Still flying, but I think I'm gonna have to stick with missiles now."

As I climb back to the AWACS to get AGMs, I drop the rather large payload on my belly towards the hovercraft I had planned to properly strafe. Because of the climb it's probably not going to be accurate, but the damn thing's nearly a bunker buster. A near miss might hit its engines, or something.

The bomb splashes down, detonating shortly underneath the hovercraft. It gets some pretty sick air before hitting the ocean very hard and experiencing severe structural problems. An anti-air gun on the destroyer you bombed is still pouring fire into you, and you do still have a SAM locked onto your aircraft, and it's very close at this point.

On her second pass, she stays at a fairly high altitude and lines up the bomb sight with the undamaged destroyer, she releases both of her bombs and banks away, out of the range of the Destroyers and keeping her fingers on the countermeasure buttons.

"AWACS, give the ground forces some advance warning if we aren't able to stop the landing craft in time." She speeds away and comes back around so that she has a better view of the small fleet.

The bombs fall, and one impacts directly on the hull, the second blasting underneath the ship. Through the anti-air fire you weave your way, but a few stray shots manage to clip you a bit. Your aircraft warns you of moderate structural damage. Even as you glide away from the AA fire, you learn the hard way that "our of range of the Destroyers" is at least a dozen kilometers out. A SAM is launched at you following about three seconds of warning tone.

: Copy, warning will be given to ground forces if you fail to halt this offensive.

20mm rounds pepper your fuselage as you go perpendicular to your trajectory. Your airframe warns you of minor structural damage, then quickly into major. Not only that, but as you watch the air pressurize into white flickers around your wings, your aircraft warns you again.

[STRESS DAMAGE]

The Viggen does overshoot, but is already turning for another pass at you.

Bell deploys chaff and flares because she doesn't know guidance system the missile is using, better safe than sorry. She flies away from the fleet to target the remaining Viggen with an RGM, releasing the missile as she closes in from above.

"Get back to the AWACS for resupply, I'll distract him."

maybe you should dump some of your A2A ordinance and get some A2G missiles

I hit the afterburners and enter the steepest climb I can get away with without stalling, and I occasionally wag my rudder and ailerons in order to make their guns have issues hitting. After I gain some separation I drop both chaff and flares, cut my throttle, and level out all in an attempt to get the SAM off.

"stuff stuff stuff!" I say to myself. My heart is pounding.

"I've got stress damage, I'm pulling back, and- forget he's still on my tail!" I yell into the radio.

I begin taking evasive maneuvers.

I figure I should actually step in and say something because judging by the reactions we just aren't being clear enough on what stress damage is. Stress damage is not some be-all end-all source of death that will certainly kill you. Just because it happens doesn't mean you're about to die, it just means that if you do that thing too much your plane might fall apart. For example, the heavy cannons. Firing them quickly will damage you, but in a moment of desperation it could be the difference between taking a bit of damage and sinking a destroyer, or "playing it safe" and being taking even more damage at the hands of said destroyer. Likewise, pulling off advanced aeronautical maneuvers may put stress on your hull, but the result of the maneuver may be that you evade a missile that would have killed you, or finally get on the tail of a particularly elusive enemy plane. If your plane hasn't been shot up, then you have almost nothing to worry about. That being said, if your plane has already suffered weapon damage, then you might want to be a bit more cautious about what you're doing. If your plane is barely holding together as it is, then a particularly gnarly maneuver might bring it to its knees.

tl;dr
Don't be afraid of stress damage, just be aware of it. As long as you aren't firing dual heavy cannons for a half a minute straight or constantly flying sideways, you won't get destroyed by it. Later on there may be targets that almost require doing something potentially dangerous to take out, so I don't want you people being too afraid to turn off the limiters.

The chaff spoofs the SAM well enough for it to fly significantly off course, detonating harmlessly several hundred meters away. You lock on to the Viggen and fire, and it disengages from its pursuit to pull a rapid maneuver out of your targeting circle. Your RGM, now unable to maintain its lock, flies harmlessly just as the SAM chasing you did.

The tracers streak past you aggressively, and you manage to spoof the SAM at an alarmingly close range. Its fuse doesn't go, but you watch the missile scream past your roosterpit, shaking it slightly and leaving your vision painfully dim.

With your AoA limiter back on, your plane doesn't begin tearing itself apart, but the bird isn't flying the way it did. Unfortunately for you, the pilot trailing you is a persistent bastard, and is already attempting to get back on your tail.

The first thing that happens as you move on your attack run is that you're spiked. To make matters worse, Oracle has to expound on how many times you've been locked on to.

: Gladiator, you are spiked two times over, repeat you have been spiked twice.

True to his word, a missile from each destroyer launches. It's going to take a while before the missile actually impact, so you continue on your attack run and catch all three hovercraft in your AGM salvo's range, firing all of them. The already damaged hovercraft is hit directly, going up in flames before going down in the depths. The other two are hit and suffer some pretty serious damage.

I push my throttle back up and head to the AWACS.

"Three AGMs, please."

Faw remains silent as he pops both chaff and flares in an attempt to throw the two missiles off his tail.

oh wait I got spiked I am clinically handicapped.

Faw pops his turbocharger in an attempt to lose the two guided missiles tracking him.
