Author Topic: Freedom of Speech infringement at my school?  (Read 7669 times)

apparently freedom of speech = freedom to be an starfish

is this what living in america is like

I don't think anyone is saying this was right

Oh my b

Only that it was a valid punishment for those who tore down the posters. Regardless of your opinion on the content, it was vandalism, and vandalism is a perfectly legitimate reason for suspension
No stuff. His friend is the one who liked the picture, not vandalised.

I think if the school group had the freedom of speech to put up the posters then the people who liked the posts should have freedom of speech on their side. As for the kids who tore down the posters, yes, suspension sounds like a reasonable punishment

No

Just as there are "many" flamboyant LGBT people, there are "many" equally despicable straight people. LGBT people are still discriminated more. Having your career ruined because of misinterpretation can happen to anyone and something as specific as you mentioned will happen extremely rarely, I haven't even heard of one case of it. Even then, being blatantly anti-gay has even helped people before, an example is Memories Pizza.
They received money from like-minded people... while being demonized by the rest of the country. BLT people are more likely to be discriminated against in parts of the country and world, while receiving almost privileged treatment in other places, such as the Northeast, Northwest, and you get the idea. It is uncommon because many people are very aware that they are walking through a minefield, but if it does happen, it's over for that person. It's not "extremely rare". It happens relatively often.

tearing down the posters was perfect ground for getting suspended, but being suspended for simply LIKING it isn't.
they didn't do anything and they are simply expressing an opinion on the matter.

The stuff done over the internet isn't really under the jurisdiction of the school.
Disregarding opinion towards parties involved or not, liking a post shouldn't be equal to a school suspension. The only time a school can get involved with it is with bullying and threats, and by that point they have to tell the police who deal with the situation.

However the people themselves who tore down the poster have committed vandalism, and they are subject to the respectable punishment of that school districts rules.

yes and we love it

I'm pretty sure there's a judicial basis for punishing the actions of kids online
I believe the reasoning was that students represent the schools they attend, so the school can punish kids for things done outside of school.

They were probably demonized because they were being discriminatory. It's not like the people demonizing them went out of their way to harm the pizza place. Rather, they raised money for LGBT charities (I can't recall which ones) and boycotted the pizza place. (totally within their right. if an ice cream shop refused people on the basis of race I would refuse to go there)

I can't think of any place where LGBT people have privilege over straight people. There are still bigots in liberal areas, richardbag.

You're acting like discriminating against LGBT people and banning them from your store shouldn't have any consequences.

Ultimax rebuttled the first part of this perfectly. Plus, they were likely funded by like-minded discriminatory individuals, people furthering a mindset that being prejudiced is A-OK, which is an incredibly dangerous mindset to have. Not only for yourself, but society as a whole. Especially with the mass media covering the thing left and right. Also, there were death and arson threats on twitter. But when's the last time a death threat on twitter ever actually happened? Never, that's when.

You claim that this happens "relatively often." Give me a relatively significant amount of cases, yes? Plus, politicians need to be careful of what they say, regardless of how touchy a subject area is. If they can't learn how to speak in public correctly then their careers are going to be ruined regardless of whether or not LGBT people have equal rights.

I know well why they were demonized. It makes perfect sense. All I am saying is that it is not like they are "praised" for believing what they believe. Ipquarx was making it appear as if there were only positive consequences for the pizza place, which was not the case. Before I continue, there's really no need for hostility. It's completely unnecessary. I can definitely think of a place that BLT people have privilege over straight people. The media. Social media. News stations. TV shows. It's not always physical places, I suppose.

Now, personally, I am against discrimination against BLT people. I think it's morally and ethically wrong. However, our Constitution guarantees our right to be wrong. It's not like they should be arrested and facing legal justice for running a private business how they see fit. Plus, it's not like they're the ONLY one of that service. There's probably another one you could use just as easily.

(Read above for first part)

Well, it's not always just politicians. It can be just anybody noteworthy. Celebrities, business owners, news personalities, you get the idea. It's not always on them, as it usually is twisted to mean something almost ENTIRELY different from what the original meaning was.

Their net gain was positive. They made almost a million dollars in donations and gained notoriety.

The media. How?? I can't think of anything apparently putting gay people above straight people in the media

Social media.
??? Social media is user driven, a reflection of society. I still don't understand in what way they have privilege here. Give an example.

News stations. TV shows. It's not always physical places, I suppose. These count as the media

Now, personally, I am against discrimination against BLT people. I think it's morally and ethically wrong.
You literally actively participated in it when you said a 'decent portion' of gay people are forgetnuts, essentially

However, our Constitution guarantees our right to be wrong. It's not like they should be arrested and facing legal justice for running a private business how they see fit. No one is asking for them to be arrested for not liking gay people. And technically they can turn away anyone they want without giving a reason. The need for protections from discrimination is still there, though. There's a reason the Supreme Court authorized integrational busing and affirmative action among government contractors and banned racial discrimination in businesses dealing with interstate commerce, it's because if things stay the way they are, then the discrimination and oppression will not go away.

BLT
psst...I think you're  missing a letter there

This isn't "special privilege"
These examples all exist to make money. Stories are run because people watch them/buy the magazines/follow the social media profiles and that generated money.
And that money is for the media outlets, not the people the stories are about
