I tried killing preston garvey and his friends but it takes about 40+ bullets for their invisible power armored friends to finally start taking damage. I have to shotgun that old woman in the face at least up to 40 times for her to finally start actually getting hurt.

Preston, Sturges and Mama Murphy are essential.
You can't kill them through combat.

The game isn't as bad as I thought but it definitely is a step back from New Vegas in a lot of ways such as no ammo crafting.
