I got bad news for you bud. The US dollar hasn't been backed by gold since 1971, and not a single country in the entire world has had a gold standard since 2013.

I don't think it matters anymore in 2016 but it means plenty in a post apocalyptic future.

also the fallout timeline splits from ours around 1950 lmao

That's right so it's likely that gold is backed in fallout's 2016 timeline.

why would gold mean anything post-apocalypse

why would gold mean anything post-apocalypse
why would gold mean anything now

the only reason gold has ever had a purpose is because of its beauty and rarity (mostly rarity)

so it doesnt rly matter whats going on gold is valuable

why would gold mean anything now
jewelry, which is definitely going to be irrelevant after the end of the world
powerful people might decide to keep some jewelry, but it's not going to mean anything to the general population

why would gold mean anything post-apocalypse

If you play Fallout 2 you'll find out because it's not covered in Fallout 3 or 4.

3-4 different factions are trying to capture the gold market in Fallout 2.

also in new vegas gold costs a lot of caps

why would gold mean anything now
-It's an excellent conductor of electricity and is widely used in electronics
-It's used in the field of healthcare to treat certain diseases and conditions
-Used in dentistry until the mid 1970s
-Used extremely extensively in aerospace design, especially in areas like rocket, satellite and other extra-terrestrial vehicles
-Pigmentation in glassmaking
-Etc.

Almost all commercial non-jewlery uses would be reduced to nothing post-apocolypse. It would not be NEARLY as valuable.

It also doesn't matter if it's post apocalyptic or not. people will find gold valuable no matter what.

There are way more bottlecaps than subway tokens
With the amount of bottlecaps around in major cities, it's obvious they'd use those as their currency over most other things
The Brotherhood has just moved into the Commonwealth. It would've been cool if they'd had their own currency that started showing up after they did, but it wouldn't be an established currency in the Commonwealth.
